US daylight saving time 2026 ends; clocks fall back 1 hour, sleep experts object

In short

Millions of Americans regained an hour of sleep over the weekend as the nation reverted to standard time through mid-March. The transition highlights a policy stalemate over the Sunshine Protection Act, which passed the House but faces resistance from senators mindful of a failed 1970s experiment with year-round daylight time. Meanwhile, medical organizations such as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine warn that darker mornings disrupt natural human sleep cycles and endanger children commuting to school in the dark.

Smartphones update on their own, but ovens, microwaves and car dashboards need a manual reset. Hawaii and most of Arizona skip DST, so their clocks stayed put, as did US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam. The Navajo Nation in Arizona does switch to match its communities in New Mexico and Utah.

The difference shows quickly. Boston's sun set at 5:39 pm on Saturday and at 4:37 pm on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
