In short

Recent coverage by The Wall Street Journal alleged that Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, the head of Iran's Security Council, urging a return to peace negotiations. Trump firmly dismissed this account, stating that he never ordered his vice president to pursue such diplomatic talks. Trump denies directing Vance to start peace talks with Iran

28 October 2026 21:51 GMT

US President Donald Trump has rejected reports that he directed Vice President JD Vance to speak to Iran in an effort to restart peace talks, saying that the communication was about medical supplies.

Responding to a question from reporters at Joint Base Andrews regarding whether he had instructed Vance to initiate negotiations, he said: “No. Iran needs help with medical supplies. Basically, it’s getting supplies in to help people that are not well.”

This comes after the Wall Street Journal reported that Vance had sent a letter to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei to request that they revive peace talks.
