Plex laid off the whole player team

By · Published by Everything Blog

In short

Plex has acknowledged that the team is working on a fix but has not provided an estimated release date. This news comes as Plex continues to face criticism for its handling of client support, particularly on the New Experience clients. The company has also been criticized for the rapid release of new apps that handle media playback better than its own apps.

Same problem.

@drzoidberg33 I think it would be really beneficial for the plex team to put out a blog post or have a fireside chat about the current state of clients across the board. The user base on every major client has seen an experience that they were widely enthusiastic about and willing to promote to friends and family, crash and burn on all the New Experience clients with little feedback or comment from Plex itself on the matter.

I think we all understand that Plex needs to have alternative sources of revenue, but that should not have come at the sacrifice of the basic functionality of the core of the app, especially when there is a new vibe coded community app being released every other day that is handling media playback better than the first party new experience apps.

This is a safety issue for users as they run to these unvetted vibe coded apps looking for a cheap solution to a problem that shouldn’t exist.

The team has burned a lot of good will these last few months, and a bit of a mea culpa could go a long way to smoothing that over.

When will this be fixed???

Hello Plex Team,

I’m experiencing the same issue on my Apple TV 4K.

Dolby Vision 4K HEVC/MKV videos keep buffering indefinitely and won’t play, while HDR10 4K videos work perfectly.

The exact same Dolby Vision files play without any issues on my TCL TV using the Plex app.

I’ve already tried changing audio tracks, disabling Force Direct Play, and restarting Plex, but nothing has worked.

I understand that the team is currently working on a fix.

Could you please confirm whether this issue will be fixed in the next update and provide an estimated release date?

Thank you for your hard work. I hope this gets resolved soon!

Following. Same issue. Very frustrating.

Same issue for me on iPhone and Apple TV 4k

Plex Server → Jellyfin

Plex Player on Apple TV → Rivulet

Migrate data → JellyPlex-Watched

Bye Plex !

Pushed up the code for this to be fixed but no telling if that’ll be merged and if this will be fixed.

Player team got laid off today.

Damn, sorry to hear that Craig.

I’ve always appreciated your help and your willingness to keep us in the loop.

I know its not much, but wishing you the best.

Darn, a lot of us were rooting for you and Plex. It sounds like Plex is about to default on things.

Holy sh*t!

goddamn. i’m sorry to hear that. i’ve been there, it sucks. doesn’t sound like it bodes well for those of us still running plex on hope…

Whelp, if I read one more post or new of Plex laying off folks I’m going to demand a refund for my lifetime pass and dump this s#it….

At this point it’s clear Plex stakeholders and leadership are looking to torpedo and shutter this system and service then sell off the scraps. Someone needs to somehow fork a Plex open sourced replacement, Jellyfin still isn’t there yet….

So the solution is to make another app and start from scratch? Wouldn’t it be better to contribute to Jellyfin and make something already 75% of the way there better? The Jellyfin project doesn’t have a money issue, they have an issue with no enough manpower writing (not-vibed) code and reviewing PRs for merging.

Seems like Plex is spending millions on advertising and saying screw their developers.

Well, if Plex fails maybe they will open source the code so it can continue.

I’m so sorry to hear that. Plex is obviously going down the toilet and won’t be long for this world if this is how they handle their people.
