Netanyahu rivals seize on Democrats' sweep of US Congress, seeking his ouster

In short

Opposition figures like Yair Lapid and Yair Golan contend that public frustration over a joint military strike on Iran fueled the American election outcome. The political reckoning arrives just a week after Netanyahu failed to secure a governing majority in national elections, leaving President Isaac Herzog to choose between him and rival Gadi Eisenkot. Furthermore, U.S. President Donald Trump pledged on election day to halt $4 billion in annual funding to Israel to eliminate a Democratic campaign talking point. The incoming Democratic-controlled U.S. Congress is now positioned to leverage budgetary measures, oversight, and public hearings to challenge Israel.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is due to hold talks on Wednesday and Thursday with party representatives before tasking one of the two men with forming the next government. Meanwhile Netanyahu remains prime minister as a caretaker.
