In short

Karl Bushby's 28-year journey began in Punta Arenas, Chile, in 1998 under a strict vow to never take transport or return to the UK until the walk was finished. Over the decades, he pushed a cart dubbed "The Beast" across mountains, deserts, jungles, and a frozen sea before swimming the English Channel to reach Britain. He is now set to finish the final steps of his journey from Hessle to a public reception at Hull's Civic Hall. His monumental expedition will officially terminate at his mother's residence in north Hull.

The adventurer said he was "absolutely overwhelmed" by the crowds who lined the bridge.

Bushby, a former paratrooper, is due to complete the challenge on Monday and will be met by his mother, his son and granddaughter when he arrives in Hull.

The adventurer has said the opportunity to embark on his walk came after the breakdown of his marriage, when his wife returned to Northern Ireland with their son.

"When I left home and I walked down south first of all to test the machine that I first had, I don't remember any of that journey except for the Humber Bridge," he said on Sunday.
