Arab parties seek to oust Netanyahu amid hurdles

In short

Netanyahu's coalition secured 53 Knesset seats while opposition forces captured 48, leaving neither side with an outright 61-seat majority. To unseat the incumbent prime minister, Jewish-led opposition factions must secure cooperation from both Ra'am, which won eight seats, and the Joint List, which captured 11. Ahmad Tibi proposed that the Joint List could provide outside backing by voting in favor of or abstaining on a new coalition to avoid formally joining a government that maintains settlement expansion. Deep ideological friction persists, however, because the Joint List opposes Israel's status as a Jewish state and demands Palestinian statehood.

But any such partnership could be politically fraught for both sides. For the Joint List, it would mean backing a government unlikely to end Israel's wars or curb settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. For Netanyahu's opponents, it would mean aligning with parties that not only criticise Israeli policies, but reject its identity as a Jewish state.
