In short

Addressing better conditions for the imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party founder has long stood as a vital requirement for resolving a 42-year conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. Pro-Kurdish lawmakers hope this relocation will revive stalled negotiations that were paused for the past two months. Ankara’s gesture aims to keep momentum alive after reciprocal disarmament pledges and legislative pardons earlier this year. Furthermore, the Kurdish leader has been held on the island of Imrali in the Marmara Sea since his capture in 1999.
