Donald Trump's order designates the workspace as a national monument after he introduced several gold design features during his second term. Future commanders-in-chief will remain free to manage interior decor and routine operational adjustments, while major structural alterations already mandate congressional sign-off under existing federal statutes. Preservation lawyers criticized the directive as legally meaningless and pointed out contradictions with other administration initiatives, such as painting the granite exterior of the historic executive office building.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that he says will prevent future presidents from making certain changes to the White House Oval Office.
Trump, a former real estate mogul, has altered the president's official office during his second term, most notably by adding many gold features to its walls.
"So we're making it a national monument, and it will not be allowed to be touched by anybody, destroyed, ripped down by stupid people, in order to build something in a slightly different shape," Trump told reporters on Thursday.

The document also says that it does not "restrict the President's authority to redecorate the monument, select furnishings, or make ordinary operational and security modifications that do not substantially impair the monument's historic structure or architectural character".
Quincy Institute Executive Vice President Trita Parsi assessed the post-election landscape during a discussion with MEE Live's Mathilda Mallinson. He warned that Donald Trump's hubris and unpredictable nature threaten to drive a military escalation, mirroring the factors that initiated hostilities. The historic action shifts all condemned individuals to life sentences without the possibility of parole, effectively reducing the nation's total death row population by nearly 30 percent. Gavin Newsom pointed to moral objections, capital punishment's staggering financial toll, and the risk of wrongful executions as core motivations. However, state law mandates that roughly two-thirds of these clemency orders must first clear review by the California Supreme Court due to prior felony convictions.
The historic election marks a significant milestone for Indian-origin representation in major American metropolitan leadership. Prior to securing the mayoral seat, the Harvard-educated urban planner dedicated nearly a decade to civic advocacy and grassroots data initiatives in southern India. This extensive background in municipal reform and community engagement forms the foundation of her approach to city governance.
