In short

The India Meteorological Department forecasts Cyclone Murasu will make landfall near Ongole with wind gusts reaching up to 120 kilometres per hour. Officials plan to relocate around 30,000 vulnerable residents after safely moving 2,000 individuals by Monday. In addition to widespread school closures, authorities warned that damage to between 6,000 and 8,000 electrical poles could severely disrupt local power supplies across four key districts. Prolonged rainfall is expected to persist through Wednesday across several neighboring states as the system weakens.

Cyclone Murasu expected to hit coast near Ongole late on Monday with wind speeds of 100-110km/h, Meteorological Department says.

Authorities in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh have begun evacuating residents from low-lying coastal areas as Cyclone Murasu bears down on a region still recovering from a deadly cyclone last week.

About 2,000 people had been evacuated by Monday, Prakhar Jain, managing director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, told the Reuters news agency. “We are planning to evacuate some 30,000 people,” he said.
