Stockbrokers to seek Sebi clarity on peak margin after EPI relief

In short

The market regulator issued an October 22 circular easing collateral rules by waiving additional margins on subsequent trades up to the value of an accepted early pay-in of sold shares. However, brokers worry that intraday peak margin snapshots may fail to reflect this waiver, triggering erroneous discrepancy reports. To resolve this, market participants want explicit instructions on how exemptions and potential reversals should be documented throughout the trading session. The framework is designed to level the playing field by helping smaller brokerages fund same-day trades without exhausting their capital.

EPI Mechanism

In a circular dated 22 October, Sebi eased margin requirements for trades made using proceeds from shares sold through the EPI mechanism. EPI allows investors to transfer shares to the clearing corporation before the usual settlement deadline. Once the transfer request is accepted, the value of the shares can be considered towards meeting specified margin requirements.
