STAT+: Pharmalittle: We’re reading about India’s new manufacturing rules, clinical trials in China, and more

In short

Under India's proposed framework, regulators must immediately suspend a facility's manufacturing license if its products fail tests covering sterility, dissolution, active ingredients, or impurity limits. A suspended drugmaker can only resume operations after completing root-cause investigations and corrective steps that pass official regulatory verification. Meanwhile, China's May restrictions have significantly decelerated investigator-initiated trials by removing the loophole that allowed human testing without central regulatory sign-off. Consequently, only 164 clinical trials have achieved clearance out of just over 1,000 submitted applications under China's new system.

The number of investigator-initiated trials, a Chinese regulatory pathway that allowed investigators to start clinical trials without sign-off from central regulators, have slowed considerably, STAT reports. Loosened rules had enabled Chinese companies to test drugs in humans faster and cheaper and prompted U.S. companies to either come to China or push the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to adopt a similar approach. But since May, when the Chinese government issued new restrictions, 164 have been approved…
