The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage III curbs just four days after activating previous tier measures as Delhi's average AQI worsened to 382. Several monitored zones, including Punjabi Bagh and Delhi Technological University, recorded readings as high as 455 on Friday. Farm fires in nearby states accounted for 13% of the capital's contamination, prompting regulators to prohibit heavy construction and restrict older private vehicles. To limit public exposure, official rules now allow primary school classes to shift to hybrid formats and offices to implement remote work.

NEW DELHI: GRAP III kicked into action Friday as a precautionary measure, with the city's air quality index steadily moving towards 'severe' (AQI above 400). Average AQI was 382 at 4pm, against 369 the previous day, nudging CAQM to further GRAP.
The move comes four days after the second stage of the graded pollution action plan was imposed.
GRAP III includes a ban on major dust-generating construction and demolition work, closure of stone crushers and mining, restrictions on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel cars in Delhi and five high-vehicle-density NCR districts, possible hybrid classes up to Class V, and 50% WFH in offices.
Areas throughout the city are already reporting severe air quality levels
While GRAP-III comes into force once the air quality turns severe or worse, many areas in the city are already recording severe levels, and AQI is set to become severe late Friday night or Saturday.
The most polluted areas were Punjabi Bagh, with an AQI of 455, DTU 455, Jahangirpuri 449, Rohini 449, RK Puram 443, Mundka 438, North Campus 431, Najafgarh 430, and Vivek Vihar…
Emergency anti-pollution curbs have taken effect across the capital region as monitoring stations registered hazardous particulate levels well into the critical zone. Meteorological projections warn that these elevated pollution levels will persist for over a week amid calm, foggy seasonal weather. Regional authorities are now weighing remote work mandates to curb local emissions and protect public health.
Judicial interventions have yielded only marginal benefits in reducing Delhi's winter smog, making widespread citizen engagement and local councillor-led education critical to real progress. The Supreme Court observed that unrealistic targets and unscientific curbs often cause widespread public violations as severe air quality persists. Addressing the crisis requires understanding regional geography and tackling key seasonal drivers like festive traffic and regional emissions.
Driven by the late Clen Atchley's vision to curb encroaching regional development, the Atchley family finalized a permanent conservation easement near Ashton to safeguard working agricultural heritage alongside native wildlife. The agreement preserves essential migration corridors connecting Wyoming to Idaho while allowing active potato farming operations to remain privately owned and managed.
