Sen. Chris Murphy remained hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a stroke over the weekend, his office confirmed.

"He's continuing to improve and heartened by the outpouring of well wishes," Josh Sorbe, Murphy's communications director, told CNBC in an emailed statement. His office did not offer additional details when asked about his status or his expected recovery.

The Senate is due back in session Monday following Tuesday's midterm elections.

Johns Hopkins Hospital's main campus is in Baltimore, though it has other locations in and around Washington.
