In short

The Supreme Court is reviewing an Election Commission directive that instructs nearly 47 lakh excluded Delhi residents to file Form 6 to restore their voting eligibility. Petitioners Anjali Bharadwaj and Amrita Johri, represented by Prashant Bhushan, argue these citizens should be restored via Form 8 or enumeration rather than being treated as fresh applicants. Election authorities have assured that submitting Form 6 will not trigger penalties under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, so long as individuals are not enrolled elsewhere. The top court previously highlighted on October 28 that voting rights are critical and urged the panel to devise reachable solutions.
