Academic breakthroughs demonstrate autonomous racing drones beating human champions and small bioactuators delivering up to 11 times the motion range of previous designs. Human perception studies also reveal that people perceive machines approaching from behind as traveling faster than those approaching from the front. Additionally, commercial initiatives are expanding rapidly through multi-site humanoid deployments and dedicated training spaces, such as a facility hosting 48 specialized cells.

In our monthly series, we showcase a selection of robotics stories from society, business, research and culture, as we track the field’s ongoing journey from specialized industrial machines to an increasingly visible social phenomenon.
A Toyohashi University of Technology team tested whether a robot’s approach direction changes how fast it seems to move. Across five experiments using a real mobile robot and virtual reality, 92% of participants showed the same bias: at the same physical speed, a robot approaching from behind seemed faster than one approaching from the front.
In the first experiment, participants learned two reference speeds—0.5 and 1.0 metres per second—then judged a robot approaching at speeds between those values. Follow-up experiments suggested the effect wasn’t explained by the robot’s appearance or motor noise. The researchers link it instead to visual factors involved in turning to look at something coming from behind.
The researchers say further work is needed to see how the…
Maintainers have scheduled critical updates across multiple active release branches to remediate several platform vulnerabilities. The impending patches resolve flaws that reach up to high severity across all targeted versions. Administrators running production deployments should prepare their environments to adopt the incoming fixes promptly to preserve system integrity.
Critical healthcare infrastructure in France faces disruption following an unauthorized security intrusion into the country's blood supply service. Officials have not yet clarified whether operational workflows or confidential donor databases were compromised during the incident. Further details regarding potential perpetrators and the full scope of system damage remain undisclosed.
Confronting its first expansion deceleration in a decade, the design platform is restructuring its operations after trimming its revenue growth forecast from 30% to 20%. Leadership is grappling with escalating artificial intelligence expenses alongside mounting pressure from rival generative tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. The sweeping operational reset aims to consolidate internal teams while adapting to lowered valuations from early investors.
