Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that although overthrowing Iran’s government "remains essential for Israel's security", it is unlikely to happen before Israel’s elections on 27 October.

“No, I don’t think that’s realistic,” he said in an interview with Israeli public broadcaster Kan.

“We have done a great deal. We have crushed it. They are at their weakest point, but we need to finish the job,” he said.

He accused political rivals Gadi Eisenkot and Yair Golan of opposing efforts to overthrow Iran’s government, insisting that its removal was necessary for Israel’s security.

Netanyahu claimed that Israeli military operations against Iran had prevented it from acquiring nuclear weapons.
