In short

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore launched an investigation after an initial sighting off Pulau Sebarok on Sunday morning revealed oil patches around Pulau Semakau and Selat Pauh. Clean-up contractors and terminal resources were activated immediately, and vessels in port have been instructed to report any additional sightings. Fortunately, surveillance confirmed that recreational and coastal areas including Sentosa, the Southern Islands, West Coast, and East Coast currently remain free of oil. The response aims to avert consequences similar to the major June 2024 accident at Pasir Panjang Terminal, which released approximately 400 tonnes of fuel into nearby waters.

MPA was alerted to a sighting of oil in the waters off Pulau Sebarok at about 10.25am. Aerial surveillance later confirmed several oil patches in the area.

The authority has activated its oil spill response contractors, while terminals in the area have been directed to deploy their spill response resources.

Relevant agencies have also been alerted to take precautionary measures to protect shorelines if necessary, while ships in port have been asked to report any sightings of oil patches.
