In short

Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir fostered an aggressive, high-standard environment that helped lead the team to the 2024 Indian Premier League title. Without relying on formal rules, his presence and expectations eliminated fear of failure and pushed batters to stay prepared from the opening overs. Venkatesh Iyer noted that several batters, including himself, Nitish Rana, and Andre Russell, remained padded up as early as the second over to adapt to in-game adjustments. This tactical flexibility and intensity propelled KKR to its third championship before Gambhir left to coach the Indian national cricket team.

Recalling the atmosphere in the KKR dugout, Iyer explained that the team's batting order was always prepared to take the field, even when the openers were still at the crease.

“Our two openers, Narine and Salt, would go out to bat. Angkrish would sit there with his pads on. He just sat there, while the rest of us - me, Shreyas, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep, and Andre Russell - sat inside; all five of us would be padded up and ready to go from the second over itself,”…
