In short

The survivors were originally undertaking a brief one-hour voyage between Murilo and Ruo before heavy weather pushed them roughly 5,400 kilometres eastward into open waters. Local residents on Fanning Island, also known as Tabuaeran, finally spotted the drifting boat on November 1. Medical staff and a church pastor provided immediate shelter and intravenous fluids to stabilize the recovering victims. However, the four other individuals who boarded the skiff in late July remain unaccounted for following the suspended search efforts.

A routine boat journey between two islands in the Federated States of Micronesia turned into a months-long ordeal after a storm swept nine people off course in the Pacific Ocean. Nearly three months after they disappeared, five of them, including two children, were found alive by villagers on a remote island in Kiribati, around 5,400 kilometres from where their journey began.

The group had set off on July 30 aboard a 20-foot skiff for what was expected to be a one-hour crossing between Murilo and Ruo, two islands in the Hall Islands of Micronesia's Chuuk state. But the boat failed to return to Ruo as scheduled, triggering a search operation that continued for 10 days before authorities suspended it in August.

The five survivors were eventually spotted near Fanning Island, also known as Tabuaeran, in Kiribati on Sunday, November 1. Their rescue brought relief to families who had spent months without news of the missing boat, although the fate of the other four passengers remains unknown, according to reports by ABC News Australia.
