Nasa unveils X-70 Fractal, a flying lab to test future aircraft technology

By · Via Times of India · Published by Everything Blog

In short

The modular aircraft is slated to conduct its maiden flight under NASA within the next two years. Engineered to test systems that are difficult to evaluate on traditional planes, it features a 10,000-pound take-off weight and reaches a maximum operating altitude of 45,000 feet. Researchers will use the flexible platform to bridge the gap between static laboratory research and dynamic real-world flight operations.

Nasa has unveiled a new experimental aircraft, the X-70 Fractal, designed to test advanced flight-control technologies and explore new ways of improving aircraft manoeuvrability. The aircraft will serve as a flying laboratory, allowing researchers to experiment with emerging aviation technologies and study how they could shape the future of flight.

The announcement was made by Nasa administrator Jared Isaacman at the UP Summit at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on November 4.

According to Nasa, the X-70 is part of the agency's renewed effort to expand its experimental aircraft programme and develop technologies that could advance future aviation. The aircraft is expected to make its first flight under the Nasa banner within the next two years.

The X-70 Fractal is a crewed experimental research aircraft built around a modular and rapidly reconfigurable design. Unlike conventional aircraft developed for specific research purposes, it is intended to accommodate different experimental systems and equipment, allowing researchers to conduct multiple tests using the same platform.

Nasa says the aircraft can carry up to 2,000 pounds of experimental payloads, both internally and externally.
