In short

The fatal incident occurred at a Yishun Ring Road flat where 52-year-old Affendi Yusoff had rented a bedroom just weeks after his release from prison. Affendi ingested 90 dextromethorphan pills and three gabapentin capsules before fatally attacking 35-year-old Fiqri Choo Iskandar with multiple blades. Although legal teams agreed Affendi was intoxicated to the point of unsound mind, Justice Philip Jeyaretnam adjourned the culpable homicide proceedings to address three differing psychiatric assessments. Notably, court documents revealed that the assailant had taken a photograph alongside the victim shortly before the fatal assault unfolded.

Affendi Yusoff, a 52-year-old Singaporean, appeared in court on Thursday (Oct 29) to face a charge of culpable homicide.

The court heard that he was possibly of unsound mind at the time, caused by his self-intoxication with dextromethorphan, a type of cough suppressant.

However, Justice Philip Jeyaretnam said he found it difficult to reconcile three psychiatrists' reports with differing opinions on the state of Affendi's mind.

He adjourned the case in order to arrange a hearing with the relevant psychiatrist present.
