Microcaps lead wealth creation race over a decade

Large CapThe large-cap segment, com prising the top 100 compa nies by market capitalisation, has been the weakest-per forming market segment so far in 2026. Higher crude oil prices, inflationary pressures, rupee weakness, rising global bond yields, and an increase in domestic interest rates have weighed on returns. However, the correction has improved valuations, with the Nifty 50 price-to-earn ings multiple falling from 22.8 times in January to 19.8 times currently.

Mid Cap

Mid-caps, comprising companies ranked 101st to 250th by market capitalisation, have fared better than large caps despite remaining in negative territory this year. The segment has benefited from selective buying, though valuation con cerns persist. Analysts say many mid-cap stocks continue to trade at rich valua tions even after the recent correction.

Small Cap

Small-cap stocks, comprising companies ranked 251st and beyond by market capitalisa tion, have outperformed both large- and mid-cap peers this year. The segment has been supported by strong domes tic institutional participation, which has helped cushion smaller stocks from foreign investor selling. However, analysts caution that future performance will depend on earnings delivery, cash-flow generation, and companies’ ability to meet the growth expectations reflected in their valuations.

Micro Cap

The micro-cap index, which tracks the top 250 compa nies beyond the Nifty 500, has outperformed all other market segments in 2026 so far. Robust domestic liquid ity, retail SIP contributions, and capital rotation towards select growth themes have supported the performance. Analysts, however, caution that index-level returns can obscure significant disper sion within the segment, as a small number of high-per forming stocks can account for a disproportionate share of overall gains.

Long-term performance

Micro-caps have topped the market-cap performance table in seven of the ten years between 2017 and 2026. However, the higher return potential of the micro-cap segment comes with greater volatility, lower liquidity, and sharper downside risks. As a result, investors should weigh val uations, earnings prospects, and their own risk tolerance when choosing between market-cap segments.
