Kristen Stewart’s Malibu home brought together contemporary architecture, Pacific Ocean views and an unconventional design feature that set it apart from the typical celebrity retreat. Purchased in 2011 with her mother, Jules Mann-Stewart, the property remained associated with the Twilight star for more than a decade before selling for $8.3 million in 2022. Architectural Digest, which reported on both the home’s original listing and its eventual sale, documented the property’s distinctive layout and its journey through the luxury real estate market. According to Architectural Digest and Mansion Global, the five-bedroom residence was initially listed for $9.5 million in August 2020. The asking price was subsequently reduced, and the property eventually changed hands in late May 2022 for $8.3 million, falling short of its original asking price but substantially exceeding its 2011 purchase price.
A modern home with an unusual architectural feature
Located in Malibu’s Latigo Beach community, the approximately 5,800-square-foot property was designed by Los Angeles-based architect Lorcan O’Herlihy. Built in 1993, the contemporary residence combined glass-and-steel construction with expansive windows, multiple levels and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.
One of its most distinctive elements was a separate, oval-shaped, two-storey guesthouse connected to the main residence by a suspension bridge. The unusual arrangement gave the property an architectural identity beyond its ocean views, while creating a degree of separation between the main living quarters and the guest accommodation.
The guesthouse featured its own living space, kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom. The main house contained the remaining bedrooms and bathrooms, along with shared living and entertaining areas. Architectural Digest’s original 2020 report highlighted the bridge as a defining feature of the property, while Observer’s coverage of the listing also detailed the unusual connection between the two structures.
Ocean views and indoor-outdoor living
Although the home was not directly on the sand, its location offered access to the beach and views of the Pacific Ocean. The upper-level deck provided one of the property’s most appealing vantage points, while glass doors opened the interior spaces towards outdoor balconies.
Inside, the home featured an open living and dining area, a fireplace and a modern kitchen with wooden cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. The layout was spread across multiple levels, with staircases connecting the different parts of the residence.
Outdoor spaces included landscaped terraces, secluded patios and a spa area. The combination of private outdoor retreats and expansive glazing gave the property a relaxed coastal character without sacrificing the contemporary design associated with high-end Malibu homes.
From a $9.5 million listing to an $8.3 million sale
The Malibu property first entered the market in August 2020 with an asking price of $9.5 million, nearly double its original purchase price. By April 2022, the home had been relisted for $8.5 million, according to Mansion Global. It ultimately sold for $8.3 million in May that year, bringing its time on the market to nearly two years.
The final sale price represented a $3.5 million increase over the reported $4.8 million purchase price in 2011, before accounting for ownership costs, maintenance, taxes and any improvements made to the home. The sale also marked the end of a long chapter for the property, which had been linked to Stewart and her mother since the early years of the actor’s rise to international fame through the Twilight franchise.
