Virat Kohli continued his remarkable run in the 50-over format with a commanding 74 as India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in a rain-affected first ODI at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday. The visitors chased down a revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Kohli, who turns 38 on Thursday, brought up his 80th half-century in ODIs with another impressive display of batting in a run chase. The former India captain walked in after Rohit Sharma departed for a six-ball duck in the opening over and immediately took responsibility for rebuilding the innings.
The experienced batter joined skipper Shubman Gill at the crease, and the pair stitched together a match-defining 113-run partnership for the second wicket. While Gill played the supporting role with a composed 37, Kohli took charge of the chase, finding boundaries regularly and keeping the required run rate under control.
New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy picked up three wickets for 49 runs to briefly bring the hosts back into the contest.
