Israeli officials say results stand as Netanyahu claims election ‘stolen’

In short

Central Elections Committee head Noam Sohlberg stated that external interference allegations will not invalidate the vote, paving the way for official certification this week. The results left Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc with 53 seats and Gadi Eisenkot's opposition bloc with 48 seats, while Arab-led parties secured a record 19 seats. Though an alliance with Arab factions could give Eisenkot a 67-seat majority, he previously rejected such a partnership. Police also released two of three suspects previously arrested with envelopes of cash in an alleged pre-election bribery case tied to the Ra'am party.

Election body says deadlocked result won’t be undermined even if foreign interference claims are found to be true.

The head of Israel’s elections commission has said the results of the country’s general election would still stand even if claims of foreign interference were substantiated.

“Our position is that even if the suspicions are substantiated, this would not undermine the integrity of the electoral process or the election results as a whole,” Central Elections Committee head Noam Sohlberg said in a video on Sunday, in which he appeared with the head of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, and the attorney general.
