The two resignations from Patiala district occurred just a day after the party announced its initial 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. While nominees for Samana and Sanour were omitted from the first roster, tension had been mounting since former minister Surjit Singh Rakhra was appointed Samana constituency in-charge in September. Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra had previously voiced criticism against the state government's performance while navigating serious legal difficulties. Pathanmajra is currently on bail after being arrested in Gwalior in March for allegedly escaping police custody during an investigation into rape and fraudulent marriage allegations.
