In short

The collision occurred on Wednesday morning between Urda and Los Yebenes when a Madrid-to-Seville train carrying about 500 passengers struck a stationary Iryo locomotive. A prior communications failure had brought the Iryo train to a halt, but a command centre issued an inexplicable instruction allowing the Renfe service to proceed. With at least 68 dead and 77 injured, judicial bodies and rail operator Renfe have launched inquiries. Opposition leaders and trade unions are now demanding an independent review of the rail system and calling for the transport minister's resignation.
