How Remedy designed Control Resonant’s wildest mission: ‘Anything kind of goes’

By · Via The Verge · Published by Everything Blog

In short

Protagonist Dylan Faden navigates intersecting timelines in the "Recursions and Iterations" mission, which relies on visual cues to prevent player confusion. Designers Anne-Marie Grönroos and Admir Burnic redesigned three initially identical research stations to show varying stages of decay representing two weeks to ten years of survival. The level also features a late-game combat sequence where alternate versions of Dylan assist the player during battle. To meet production constraints, the development team repurposed existing character animations to bring these duplicate timeline allies to life.

One of Control Resonant’s most memorable missions involves time travel — kind of. There are certainly multiple timelines intersecting, or maybe overlapping, or maybe running in parallel. As protagonist Dylan Faden, you meet some of the researchers who are trapped in and investigating these timeline anomalies. Dylan’s first encounter with the researchers is somehow not the researchers’ first time meeting Dylan. But before we can learn much more, time glitches out, and they all turn up dead.

That seems to be the end result in every timeline Dylan comes across, even toward the end of the mission. What does…
