The conviction marks Joshua Wong's second under the Beijing-imposed national security law after he admitted to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The judge reduced the starting penalty from 13 years down to 10 years in recognition of the early admission of guilt. Prosecutors focused on Wong's collaboration with activist Nathan Law, citing overseas advocacy and meetings with U.S. politicians Nancy Pelosi and Marco Rubio to seek sanctions. Although officials argue such measures protect stability, Wong had previously been scheduled for release in January 2027.

Judge William Tam said during the sentencing hearing that Wong's offense was of a grave nature and rejected that his role was limited.
He also said he considered a 13-year prison sentence as a starting point but reduced it because of Wong's guilty plea.
Wong looked calm and thanked his supporters before leaving the court. His…
