In short

The court handed down the punishment just months before the thirty-year-old former student leader was scheduled to finish serving a subversion sentence. Authorities targeted his years of international lobbying, making him the only defendant from the city's largest national security trial to face a second prosecution under Beijing's legal framework. Although his defense lawyer sought a lighter sentence of three to 10 years by citing his previous incarceration, the court rejected the plea and imposed the maximum 10-year term. Supporters noted that while the activist remained energetic, he expressed worry and disappointment over the extended detention.

Wong is one of Hong Kong's best-known democracy activists and was once a figurehead of youthful dissent in the Chinese city, has spent almost six years in jail and turned 30 behind bars last month.

The former student leader was previously expected to be freed in January, upon completion of a jail term of four years and eight months for "subversion" under a Beijing-imposed national security law.

But Hong Kong authorities used the same law to charge Wong again in June 2025, accusing him of asking other countries and entities to impose sanctions against the finance hub and China.
