'He's got to go': Hakeem Jeffries calls for Hegseth's removal but stops short of impeachment

In short

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared that the current defense secretary must be removed due to a lack of qualifications, yet he withheld an endorsement of impeachment pending caucus discussions. This resistance aligns with threats from across the aisle, where a Republican representative prepared multiple impeachment articles. Beyond personnel challenges, Democrats intend to utilize committee investigations and war powers measures to target administration policies and address economic fallout from the war in Iran.

He said Democrats "shouldn't have to wait" for the new Congress to act.

If passed, it would present President Trump with the choice to either sign or veto it. Overriding a veto would require two-thirds majorities in both chambers. As of now, Democrats are short of a veto-proof majority in both chambers.

Jeffries stopped short of supporting impeachment proceedings against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
