Vickrum Digwa, who stabbed Nowak five times and lied to police, is challenging his minimum term of 21 years as overly severe, even as the court reviews an Attorney General referral arguing the sentence was unduly lenient. Digwa's mother, Kiran Kaur, received a three-year sentence in July for hiding the murder weapon. Because her conviction qualifies under the Sentencing Act 2026 early release scheme, and taking into account 221 days spent on remand, Kaur is scheduled to be released this December. Nowak's relatives have described her release after only a year in prison around the anniversary of the killing as a disgrace.
