In short

The recent wave of violence intensified after Ukrainian operations targeted Russian freighters and energy infrastructure, drawing retaliatory warnings and strikes from Moscow. On October 28, a drone assault sank the Liberian-flagged Contship Jet Monrovia off the Bulgarian coast, although all 18 crew members were safely rescued. European officials have condemned the targeting of maritime trade, warning that disruptions to an export corridor that once handled roughly one-third of global grain shipments weaponize hunger against vulnerable nations.

Kyiv, Ukraine – Three black naval drones resembling oversized plastic toys struck a freighter sluggishly navigating the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria on October 28.

Aerial drones joined the attack, and explosions rocked the Liberian-flagged Contship Jet Monrovia, loaded with more than 400 terracotta-coloured containers. The vessel, travelling from the Israeli port of Haifa to Romania, listed and sank, but all 18 crew members were rescued, Bulgarian authorities said.
