Gadkari’s new message for expressway drivers

By · Published by Everything Blog

In short

The revised traffic directive permits speeds up to 120 km per hour on expressways, though drivers must strictly observe route-specific postings. To modernize oversight, authorities are actively leveraging AI-based inspection and monitoring technologies to track road safety and compliance. Nitin Gadkari also cautioned developers that subpar road construction will lead to blacklisting, citing a 30 percent reduction in quality defects driven by social media reports and survey vehicles. Furthermore, the administration plans to invest Rs 8 lakh crore in tunnel infrastructure over the coming five years.

He also said he had asked officials not to send notices to motorists who exceed the speed limit by up to 20%. “If someone goes beyond that, issue a challan,” he said.

The remarks come as the government uses AI-based inspection and enforcement systems to improve road safety and encourage lane discipline. The minister's comments, however, should not be taken as a blanket exemption from existing speed limits on every expressway. Motorists should follow the applicable speed limit and traffic rules on their route.
