In short

Federal officials and urban policy leaders convened on November 3 and 4 at the NCAER campus to push for a national mission dedicated to urban road modernization. Experts noted that while national highways and rural networks have advanced rapidly, city streets require standardized designs, institutional accountability, and sustainable funding frameworks. The discussions highlighted ongoing regional overhauls, including Uttar Pradesh’s CM GRIDS scheme which is upgrading over 290 kilometres of roads across 17 cities. Implementing unified procurement standards and cross-agency coordination aims to curb project redundancies and improve infrastructure durability.

"Roads create prosperity, and this is as true of a city street as it is of an expressway. The quality of our infrastructure can never be better than the quality of the people who plan and build it. Good work must be recognised, and poor work must have consequences," Gadkari said, according to a press release.
