French blood banks hit alongside cyberattack on European supermarkets

In short

Intruders breached cooling and monitoring infrastructure at three regional French Blood Establishment facilities overnight between Sunday and Monday. Medical staff prevented any loss of life-saving blood supplies by immediately transferring the materials to unconnected units following automated system alerts. Meanwhile, simultaneous tampering with supermarket refrigeration across eight European nations ruined large quantities of groceries. The French health ministry has disabled remote access to the affected units as formal investigations proceed.

Around the same time, hackers tampered with refrigerators at stores in eight European countries, forcing retailers to discard large quantities of food, in an attack that echoed an incident affecting dozens of supermarkets in France three weeks earlier.

The situation was under control on Wednesday (Nov 4), the health ministry said, adding that remote access to the affected refrigerators had been disabled.
