In short

The restructured system replaces Victoria's 25-page form with streamlined assessments, requiring applicants to submit a 60-second video and complete interviews regarding their parliamentary knowledge and state policy ideas. A separate committee comprising state leader Mike Newman, state president Rebecca Thompson, and state secretary Sam Donovan reviews recommendations to make final endorsements. Strict non-disclosure agreements now threaten candidates with financial liability if they share or mishandle confidential internal information. By September, the party attracted 900 applications across 93 New South Wales seats before extending recruitment through late October.

In 2023, a young and ambitious Liberal moderate was on the brink of securing one of the most powerful roles in the party: state director of the New South Wales branch. Multiple Liberal sources familiar with recruitment for the position, which involves running election campaigns and managing fundraising, confirm Mark Jones was among the final three candidates for the role before his career advancement was ultimately blocked.

Internal One Nation documents seen by Guardian Australia show Jones – who quit the Liberal party in January – has become integral to One Nation’s state election campaigns performing similar administrative functions.

Since joining One Nation as a political consultant in February, Jones has helped redesign the party’s candidate selection and vetting process and sat in on interviews. He is being assisted by former Queensland National party executive Susie Douglas, who briefly worked for the Palmer United Party before quitting and describing it as a cult.
