The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation deployed roughly Rs 1.2 lakh crore across various asset classes in the first quarter, directing nearly Rs 17,000 crore into equities. The stock market push was financed primarily by Rs 12,000 crore from the provident fund and Rs 4,800 crore from the pension scheme. To balance risks and optimize liquidity, short-term debt and cash instruments absorbed the largest single portion of fresh inflows at 48%, or around Rs 56,000 crore. These tactical allocations allow the institution to pursue inflation-beating portfolio gains while managing substantial ongoing operational commitments.

NEW DELHI: Taking advantage of the weak stock markets, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (
EPFO) deployed nearly Rs 17,000 crore in fresh equity investments during April-June.
Equities accounted for 14.6% of the fresh investment across all asset classes and underline EPFO's reliance on stocks to generate inflation-beating returns for its nearly 30 crore members. It comes at a time when yields on central govt securities (G-secs) and state development loans (SDL), which account for more than three-fourths of EPFO's investments, have ranged between 6.5 and 7% in recent years.
EPFO's cumulative equity corpus rose to around Rs 3.7 lakh crore at the end of June, increasing the aggregate equity exposure to 11.2% of the Rs 33.2 lakh crore investment corpus, according to data discussed by the agency's investment committee last month. The agency is allowed to deploy 15% of its corpus in equities.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts to curb high borrowing costs are driving officials to reconsider their long-standing debt strategy as 30-year bond yields top 5.30%. The upcoming quarterly refunding announcement could abandon multi-year pledges of stable note and bond auction sizes to clear a path for reducing long-term debt issuance. Such a maneuver risks leaving the government heavily vulnerable to interest rate swings by forcing greater reliance on short-term paper to fund roughly $2 trillion annual d…

The couple allegedly deployed altered donation slips and forged educational documents to amass illicit savings, which authorities report were subsequently funneled into buying half-a-dozen real estate properties. They now face substantial financial penalties alongside broader legal proceedings for their fraudulent activities.
