‘Elections matter’: Houston mayor moves to limit ICE cooperation after Democrats’ victory

By · Via Times of India · Published by Everything Blog

In short

Mayor John Whitmire directed the Houston police department to curb its joint efforts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, citing recent midterm election results. The policy change marks a stark departure from the statewide immigration crackdown previously enforced by Republican leadership. Former Governor Greg Abbott had aligned with President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda and regularly threatened municipalities that resisted enforcement. The reversal comes after Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Abbott to become Texas's first Latina governor.

Abbott, a close Trump ally, has previously threatened action against Texas cities seeking to limit immigration enforcement.

Defending the decision, Whitmire said: “I've said many times, elections matter.”

The move signals how the midterm results are already translating into policy changes at the local level, potentially setting up a fresh…
