In short

Jon Husted had initially assumed the seat via appointment in January 2023 after JD Vance vacated it upon his election as vice president. Campaign debates largely centered on healthcare affordability, the war in Iran, and controversial data center deals connected to Husted's past state government work. By mid-October, overall spending across campaigns and outside political groups surged past $422 million, driven in part by Brown's significant fundraising edge.

This was Husted's first race for the U.S. Senate. He was appointed to the seat by Gov. Mike DeWine in January 2023 after JD Vance won the vice presidency. But Husted has had a long career in elected office in Ohio, serving as speaker of the Ohio House, the secretary of state and lieutenant governor.
