In short

The victory makes Gina Hinojosa the first Democratic governor to lead the state since Ann Richards stepped down in 1995. A former school board president, she built her platform around public education, household expenses, and opposition to the incumbent's $1 billion private-school voucher program. Taking office in January 2027, she will encounter a Republican-led legislature that requires compromise to advance policy.
