NEW RESOURCES

Discovered thanks to MottG on Mastodon. Brown University: Brown student maps the hidden global labor powering AI. “As part of an ongoing project to explore the material underpinnings of the digital world, [Cunyan Ma] has created an interactive map linking technology companies and their intermediaries to data workers around the world. The map, which is freely available online, aggregates existing data worker databases, Ma’s own data collection and news reports describing the conditions many data workers experience.”

Shaylynn Hayes-Raymond: Introducing MisophoniaResearch.com: An open space for misophonia research and collaboration. “MisophoniaResearch.com aims to make misophonia research easier to find, understand, and contribute to. The site brings together a research database, a directory of researchers and organizations, and space for discussion and collaboration. Participation is open to everyone with an interest in misophonia research, regardless of institutional or organizational affiliation. Researchers, clinicians, students, people living with misophonia, and other contributors are welcome.”

NYC LGBTQ Historic Sites Project: First-Ever Digital 3D Model of the Historic Stonewall Inn Launches. “LGBTQ preservationists and historians at the NYC LGBTQ Historic Sites Project and Making Gay History have launched the first-ever digital 3D model of the historic Stonewall Inn, including the surrounding Stonewall National Monument.”

TWEAKS AND UPDATES

TechCrunch: Discord is making its public communities more searchable, and people have concerns. “Starting November 16, every Discoverable Server will have its own web page, which may feature automated summaries of discussions in active public channels. Beginning in mid-December, selected messages from public channels may also appear in search engine results.”

Gizmodo: Elon Musk’s AI-Generated ‘Odyssey’ Is Here to Save Western Civilization. “So is it a good film? Well, no. It’s not a good film in the slightest. If anything, it reads more like a trailer or the overlong intro to a video game, the kind you skip halfway through the first viewing and then install a mod so you don’t have to smash the space bar every time.”

Meduza: Yandex moves all three of its supercomputers to new site after Ukrainian drone attacks. “Yandex has moved all three of its supercomputers — Lyapunov, Galushkin, and Chervonenkis — to new locations, its press service said. The supercomputers were not damaged during the Ukrainian drone attacks, Yandex said.”

AROUND THE SEARCH & SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD

New York Times: Can This ‘Titan’ of TikTok Get Gen Z to Start Cooking?. “Until 2023, no one had ever been honored with the title ‘queen of the mac and cheese subreddit.’ Then the chef and influencer Tini Younger posted her multistep, hyper-cheesy recipe on TikTok. Calling for six different dairy products and corkscrew-shaped pasta, it became an instant classic on many Thanksgiving tables — and ignited an annual debate that flared up again this month. That viral recipe also introduced Ms. Younger to an audience beyond TikTok, where she has built her career as one of the foremost food voices of Generation Z.”

SECURITY & LEGAL

Associated Press: A cybersecurity issue forces a major New Mexico hospital to divert patients and close clinics. “A major hospital network in New Mexico raced to fix a cybersecurity issue on Monday that forced it to send ambulances to other hospitals and left the state without an emergency department capable of treating the most serious injuries. The University of New Mexico Health System told people not to show up at its main hospital in Albuquerque and canceled appointments at its more than 30 clinics.”

Korea JoongAng Daily: Korea fines Google and Apple $47.6 million over in-app payments. “Korea’s media regulator fined Google and Apple a combined 63.71 billion won ($47.6 million) for forcing app developers to use their own in-app payment systems, three years after the companies were first notified of the proposed sanctions.”

AFP: Meta, Snap head to trial in another case about social media’s harms. “Jury selection is expected to begin on Wednesday in Los Angeles for another landmark trial about the alleged harms of social media on young users, with Meta and, for the first time, Snap as defendants.”

RESEARCH & OPINION

ScreenHub: Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive has rediscovered a lost 1926 silent film. “Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive has announced the re-discovery of The Little Irish Girl, a silent film from 1926 starring Dolores Costello (the grandmother of actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore), which has been considered lost since the late 1940s.”

OTHER THINGS I THINK ARE COOL

BBC: ‘It’s offensively cheap’: How solar power is quietly becoming bigger than nuclear. “The world’s solar power is crossing a threshold. A decade ago, it barely registered on a global scale, providing just 1% of the world’s power. In 2026, it will almost certainly increase to 10% of power, and overtake nuclear, a mainstay of electricity since the late 1970s.” Good morning, Internet…
