The 49th edition of the iconic rally is scheduled to run between January 9 and January 23, traversing 7,824 kilometers from Loule-Faro to Marrakesh. Portugal's Algarve region will stage the prologue and opening special stage before the course crosses into Morocco for 11 stages and a rest day in Agadir. Organisers emphasized that this relocation represents an exceptional, one-off intervention ahead of a planned return to Saudi Arabia for the 50th edition in 2028.

Organisers say moving Dakar Rally, likely scheduled January 9-23, out of Saudi Arabia was ‘exceptional and one-off’.
The 2027 edition of the Dakar Rally will be held in Morocco following a prologue and first stage in Portugal, organisers Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) said, five days after announcing the event would not be held in Saudi Arabia due to security concerns.
“The Algarve will host the prologue and the first special stage. Morocco, with the aim of exploring its territory in its entirety, from north to far south, will host 11 stages and a rest day in Agadir,” ASO said in a statement.
