Companies with high credit ratings shifting to bond market as bank loans become dearer

In short

The Reserve Bank of India's 0.25 percent rate increase made benchmark-linked bank loans significantly more expensive due to added credit risk premiums. AAA-rated entities tapped the domestic bond market instead, securing October funding at coupon rates spanning 8.13 percent to 8.85 percent. For instance, state-run REC raised Rs 4,000 crore via five-year bonds at 8.30 percent, undercutting State Bank of India's 8.65 percent lending rate. Rating agency Icra warned that ongoing sovereign yield increases could eventually compress this corporate borrowing spread.
