‘City of immigrants’: Who is Nithya Raman, the Los Angeles mayor-elect?

In short

Raman entered the mayoral contest at the eleventh hour after reversing an earlier endorsement of Bass, warning that municipal conditions had reached a breaking point. Her winning platform focused heavily on immigrant protections, affordable housing development, and urgent solutions to the city's severe homelessness challenges. Prior to her historic mayoral win, she served on the Los Angeles City Council after unseating incumbent David Ryu in 2019. Her victory reflects wider midterms success for the Democratic Socialists of America, which saw 105 endorsed candidates poised to take office.
