Bulgaria votes in presidential runoff after tight first round

In short

Incumbent acting president Iliana Iotova faces former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov after neither secured a majority during a low-turnout, 27-candidate first round. The runoff unfolds against a backdrop of regional danger, highlighted by the recent sinking of a Greek container ship off the Black Sea coast. Although both contenders advocate for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine, Gyurov previously formalized a security cooperation pact with Kyiv during his interim premiership.

SOFIA: Bulgarians went to the polls on Sunday (Nov 1) to elect a president after a tight race between the two leading candidates failed to produce an outright winner in last weekend's first round vote for the largely ceremonial role.

Incumbent president, Iliana Iotova, 61, led over ex-caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov, 50, but fell short of the 50 per cent threshold in the first round race of 27 candidates that saw a record-low turnout.

Exit polls will be published after voting ends at 8 pm (1800 GMT), with a result likely on Monday as the ballot papers are counted.
