Anthony Zurcher: Midterm carnage weakens Trump but he still wields power for now

By · Published by Everything Blog

In short

Sweeping midterm losses have left Republicans without majorities in either the House or the Senate, ushering in unified Democratic legislative control. In response, Donald Trump has signaled plans to rely on his unilateral executive tools and a veto pen that incoming majorities lack the numbers to override. Internal party discipline is simultaneously fracturing, highlighted by Vice-President JD Vance publicly attributing the loss of the Senate to the administration's military campaign in Iran. Speculation has also mounted over potential cabinet turnover, including reported discussions regarding the future of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

But also unacknowledged was that the clock is ticking on Trump's presidency – and it will get increasingly more difficult for him to use the powers at his disposal.

Many of his most significant moves have been through presidential orders rather than laws passed by the Republican-controlled Congress.

That includes tariffs imposed on allies and adversaries alike as well as the military operations launched in Venezuela and Iran.
