TIRUPATI: The accused in the Raptadu classroom chainsaw attack, Hemanth, may have to undergo amputation of his right leg after sustaining severe gunshot injuries during a police encounter in the Atmakur forest area on Sunday evening.

Hospital superintendent Dr D Malleswari said Hemanth was stable but faced a serious risk of losing part of his right leg. Medical assessments found that severe damage to the limb had affected blood circulation, causing the tissue to deteriorate rapidly.

Doctors said amputation, potentially up to the knee, might be necessary to prevent further complications.

Preliminary X-rays of both legs did not show any lodged bullets. However, further tests, including additional X-rays and specialised scans, are being conducted. An anaesthetist is also monitoring his condition to assess his fitness for surgery.

A team of orthopaedic specialists and general surgeons will examine the extent of vascular damage in the operation theatre before deciding whether to proceed with the amputation.

Hemanth was allegedly involved in a chainsaw attack on two minor Class 10 students at a Zilla Parishad government school in Raptadu on Saturday morning.
