Amazon, Intel shares crash up to 25% in premarket trade as AI spending concerns trigger tech sell-off - What's next?

In short

Massive infrastructure outlays are eroding the balance sheets of leading technology firms, prompting an aggressive retreat across the semiconductor and software sectors. Amazon is driving towards a projected $220 billion in annual capital spending to build out data centers, which resulted in a swing to a $7.6 billion quarterly cash burn. Concurrently, Intel is struggling with manufacturing bottlenecks, rising production expenses, and an expected sequential drop of more than 20% in its core PC chip unit. This capital strain is mirrored across big tech, with peers also resorting to negative free cash flows or multi-billion-dollar debt offerings.

The company said it spent more than $77 billion on property and equipment in the third quarter, well above analyst expectations, as it continues to expand data centre capacity and meet demand for AI services.

Amazon reported a cash burn of $7.6 billion in the previous quarter, compared with cash generation of $14.8 billion in the third quarter last year. Like its competitors, Amazon has made a massive spending commitment to developing AI software and infrastructure, forecasting capital expenditure of $220 billion this year.

Meanwhile, Intel tanked 25% after the chipmaker warned that it would burn cash this year due to a weak PC market, manufacturing bottlenecks, and heavy spending to expand production.
