In short

The Supreme Court turned down a plea demanding an urgent hearing on massive domestic airfare spikes during the Diwali season. Counsel for the petitioner highlighted that tickets had surged up to 700%, claiming the practice breaches Article 14 of the Constitution. However, the bench dismissed the request for immediate relief with a blunt remark advising people to avoid air travel. The broader regulatory dispute remains pending as the Centre prepares to issue official pricing rules under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024.

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Monday refused to urgently list a plea against steep rise in domestic air fares during Diwali season and seeking a direction to Centre to frame a mechanism to cap air fares on domestic routes during festival periods.

The issue of regulation of air fares is still pending before SC, a bench hearing the plea was informed while seeking the court's intervention. But the court turned down the plea.

Advocate Abhinav for the petitioner submitted that fares have gone up 700% amounts to a violation of Article 14 of the Constitution. "Don't travel by air," the bench said.

Centre had earlier told SC that the rules on air fares under Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, will be published in two weeks.
